🔹 6th National Pharmacovigilance Week 2026: 17th -23rd September 2026🔹
The theme; “Promoting Rational Use of Medicines through Pharmacovigilance - A Step Towards
Safer Healthcare” of this year's National Pharmacovigilance Week highlights an essential connection:
rational use of medicines and pharmacovigilance are closely linked to medication safety and
better patient outcomes.
Inaugural Ceremony of 6th National Pharmacovigilance Week (NPW) 2026, was organised by the
National Coordination Centre - Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (NCC–PvPI), Indian
Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India at
Padmashri Nitya Anand Auditorium Hall, ALRC Building, IPC on 17th September, 2026
The programme brought together perspectives from pharmacovigilance, clinical practice, public
health, regulation and patient safety.
The inaugural session included:
∙Welcome Address by Dr. Jai Prakash, Officer-in-Charge, PvPI
∙Opening Remarks by Dr. V. Kalaiselvan, Secretary-cum-Scientific Director, IPC
∙Virtual remarks by Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Director General, ICMR
∙Remarks by Shri Aditya Kumar Mamgain, Deputy Secretary, MoHFW, Govt. of India
∙Remarks from Prof. Sangeeta Sharma and Dr. Abdul Nasser experts representing clinical
practice, public health and the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare
∙Video messages from Shri Tukaram Mundhe, Commissioner FDA, Maharashtra, and Dr.
Shanthi Pal, Team Lead, Pharmacovigilance, WHO

The technical sessions were particularly relevant to the theme:
“Pharmacovigilance and Rational Use of Medicines: Two Pillars of Medication Safety”

- Dr. Abdul Nasser, Max Hospital, Vaishali
Pharmacovigilance is not simply about reporting adverse drug reactions-it is about continuously
learning from medicine use, identifying potential risks, generating safety information and using that
knowledge to support safer healthcare practices.
The inclusion of Materiovigilance Programme of India (MvPI) also emphasised the broader vision of
patient safety, extending beyond medicines to medical devices.
